From Casual Tea Lover to Serious Entrepreneur

Rick, the founder of Qi Aerista recounts the motivation behind starting the company to develop Qi Aerista.

We started our own company in 2013 and began with some seed money mainly from family and friends. We have also built our core team with diverse backgrounds and expertise. We owed a lot to the friends and acquaintances that offered help, but in the end it is up to the core team to become industrious and entrepreneurial to get the job done.

As Steve Jobs once said:

People say you have to have a lot of passion for what you’re doing and it’s totally true. And the reason is because it’s so hard that if you don’t, any rational person would give up. It’s really hard. And you have to do it over a sustained period of time. So if you don’t love it, if you’re not having fun doing it, you don’t really love it, you’re going to give up. And that’s what happens to most people, actually.

There is not a day that passes without a voice inside my head that says, “Let’s just quit. It’s just too hard to continue.” But my internal drive just automatically motivates me to work on the project from morning till bedtime in a welcoming mood, day in and day out. This way of life, with no meaningful vacation to speak of, has continued for over 3 years now. But frankly speaking, I just love it, and I am enjoying every moment of it.

So what’s the reason behind my internal drive? I think it’s because of the tea. Specifically, it’s the cup of Hong Kong-style milk tea that I’ve first tried making with our early version prototype several years ago. That rich and thick taste is perhaps the strongest reason that drives me to work on this project to this day. Maybe it’s just a coincidence. But maybe it’s fate to have someone from Hong Kong like me to have stumbled on this discovery and will make an effort to introduce to the world this fascinating tea drink.

In addition, as a Chinese, it is perhaps my ultimate calling to instill fresh meaning into the centuries-old Chinese tea culture, which is facing challenges in adapting to modern life. Coming up with Qi Aerista that is able to merge tradition and innovation in an ingenious way is simply exhilarating.

Last but not least, we believe with Qi Aerista Smart Tea Brewer we can make the tea brewing process easy and enjoyable, so that more people would become tea drinkers and consume more tea. This in turn will help the tea-growing regions around the world that tend to be mountainous and less-developed, like in China, India, Sri Lanka and some African countries.
